About the Casino
Casino Rosalia opened its doors in 1963 as the first casino in this part of Europe. For years it was the symbol of glamour, high class entertainment, and business opportunities for the local population.
During the seventies and the eighties it was ‘the’ destination for gaming, extravagance and fun. Guests from all around Europe came to Opatija and challenged their luck in Casino Rosalia. It was a popular venue for many celebrities as well.
The villa itself was built in 1896 by the noble family Henckel von Donnersmarck,counts of Germany, Hungary and Czech. Count Guido Henckel von Donnersmarck, industrial magnate, was the second richest person in Germany before World War Two. He was also the first one to bring gambling to Villa Rosalia as a means of entertainment for the upper management of the family’s mining business.
